Next Generation Science Standards are proposed to set in motion a conceptual shift in teaching and learning. Okay. What does that really mean? Well, to start off with, a number of factors were analyzed before writing these new standards, including an analysis of how students learn best. The more traditional method of teaching science through lectures and textbooks, supplemented with a project or lab to reinforce the learned concept, have been reconsidered. This is where the conceptual shift takes place. The “learning” is now the “doing.” The two have been more thoroughly synthesized with these new standards.
