Earth Day is Coming!
Earth Day is on its way, and what better way to celebrate than with kids?
This article by Connie Williams, school librarian and past President of the California School Library Association, offers up a little history of Earth Day along with some tips on ways librarians can engage with students to explore the science and the issues surrounding our care and upkeep of planet Earth. She features two Earth science books from Nomad Press by authors Erin Twamley and Joshua Sneiderman:
Connie writes, "By the 1970s there was a growing awareness that population growth could be an issue, that food shortages are a possibility, and that fossil fuel energy is limited. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring written years before had opened the door (and our eyes) to investigations on how humans were impacting our world through the many ways we interact with it as we go through our daily lives. We started to take a hard look at the future. Even as we waited in long gas lines, limited our driving time, and worried, we also got busy and studied how to make it better."
