Poetry for Kids! Celebrate National Poetry Month in Your Classroom!

April isn't over yet! Let's turn our attention away from Earth Day and celebrate Poetry Month!

Poetry Month

Why do we have a poetry month? Because learning how to read and write poetry promotes critical and creative thinking skills while giving kids an outlet for emotions they might be grappling with.

Kids often love poetry without any adult encouragement. Think of Shel Silverstein, nursery rhymes, and playground chants. And advertising jingles! When you want to get kids reading poetry, start with something catchy, something they might even be familiar with. Like this one by Hughes Mearns:

Antigonish [I met a man who wasn’t there]
Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
I wish, I wish he’d go away...

When I came home last night at three
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall
I couldn’t see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don’t you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don’t slam the door... (slam!)

Last night I saw upon the stair
A little man who wasn’t there
He wasn’t there again today
Oh, how I wish he’d go away...

See? Poetry doesn't have to be serious! Kids love to listen to and read poems that are silly, funny, surprising, and entertaining. And there are lots of great language lessons to be learned through poetry, including discovering metaphors, similies, hyperboles, and many other fun techniques!
