Doesn't Everyone Spend Friday Nights Writing Literary Essays?

I got an email the other day from one of my oldest friends, who teaches fourth grade.

I am trying to teach my 4th graders how to write Literary Essays. (The theme of this story is . . ., the character traits of this character help them over come this challenge by . . .,  These two stories are alike because . . .)

So my question is, are there any examples of when we would use this type of writing in the real world or is it just for future English classes and PARCC tests? I am hoping that by understanding the larger role of this type of writing I can find a way to approach it that will work for me. Any suggestions?
